Golden Years
One of the constants in this life is change. The only things that don’t change are God and His Word. But in the here and now, we can pretty much rely on another change or changes coming around the very next corner. We feel that some changes are good and perhaps a few are even great, but when the change shakes our comfort zone, the adjustment period is often filled the five stages of grieving because it involves the loss of what was and an adjustment to what is not yet fully known. What was may have been lousy but we had managed to move it into our comfort zone. During the Golden Years (which is somewhere near the end of the rainbow), and event called retirement usually comes along (at least in our society) and with retirement, comes change. Change that requires adjustments, some considered good or maybe even great, along with others that wobble our comfort zone and for a time, create uneasiness. When one half of a couple enters retirement, the relationship takes on a different flavor and for a time, adjustments are made as a somewhat different relationship begins to grow and take shape. We are in the process of making such an adjustment…as Marie transitions from hardworking, loyal, professional, underpaid and underappreciated employee to hardworking, loyal, underpaid and appreciated wife, grandmother, interior designer, house-painting, power-washing, lawn-mowing retiree. Ahh….the Golden Years.

The Golden Years...I think the best is definitely yet to come for both of you, and I hope you get another 30 years to enjoy the fruits of your labors in your younger years. We are so happy you both made this decision for Mom and know that her creativity and oomph will return in new ways as she enters this new phase of life. She might be underpaid, but God highly values a woman who is a helpmeet to her husband and a keeper of her home! When is the pie coming out of the oven? We'll bring ice cream :-).
Good question! I don't know if we will ever get her into the kitchen again. Maybe if we limit her duties and our expectations to baking pies, etc. she might be lured back
Yes. I think this is a good plan!
I was so thrilled to hear about your "retirement" and really think you made a good decision. Your health and peace of mind are hopefully your priority and hard to replace. Hopefully, the transition period goes well without too many ups and downs regarding the decision, etc.
Sounds like you have done a lot since you returned home from New Zealand and have more planned. Sure hope you get to enjoy your retirement - I don't think I ever really got to start mine yet. You may be busier than ever and hopefully enjoying it all, too. Keep the communication lines open and a good sense of humor.....and one hand holding tightly to the good Lord and each other. Lots of blessings to both of you!
